Location: Teagasc Crops, Environment and Land Use Research Centre, Johnstown Castle, Wexford. Reporting To: Head of Department - Environment Soils and Land-Use and/or other nominated manager as maybe identified from time to time. Grade/Salary: Research Officer, with a starting salary of €33,387 per annum. The current salary scale is €33,387 to €64,981. Starting pay will be at the minimum of the scale per Government Circular E100/8/82. Exceptional circumstances may apply for candidates with current or previous service in the public sector (including Teagasc). Remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government Policy. Basic Function: To develop agri-environmental spatial analysis and modelling within the Environment Soils and Land-Use Department. He/she will be responsible for land-use modelling and spatial analysis to underpin the sustainability of Irish farming systems. Background: Teagasc is one of the key actors in facilitating the realisation of the ‘Vision for growth for the Irish agricultural sector’ as set out in Food Wise 2025 and supporting the economic and environmental sustainability of the Irish agricultural sector. Teagasc - Johnstown Castle is Ireland’s leading research institute on environment, soils and land-use, and conducts both fundamental and applied research on a wide range of subjects, e.g. nutrient efficiency, water quality, gaseous emissions, soil quality, agro-ecology and land use. Johnstown Castle has many different laboratory, greenhouse and field facilities to support research. The Environment Soils and Land-Use Department focuses on providing solutions for farmers and policy makers for economic and environmentally sustainable farming. One such recent tool is Nutrient Management Online which is the first national spatially explicit soil fertility database, which includes different aspects of land use and management, and supports farmers’ planning decisions relating to soil, crop and nutrient management. There are large spatial and temporal datasets generated and maintained by the Environmental Soils and Land-Use Department, the Spatial Analysis Unit and elsewhere across Teagasc. The researcher will join the integrated multidisciplinary research team and will be responsible for land-use modelling and spatial analysis to evaluate sustainable production systems and sustainability options for Irish agriculture. They will develop new research in land-use modelling to optimise functional land management to help Irish agriculture achieve its production and environmental targets for soil and water quality, greenhouse gases/carbon sequestration and biodiversity as well as other areas that may emerge over time. Teagasc is now seeking to appoint a highly qualified and enthusiastic researcher. The position will be based in the Teagasc Environment, Soils and Land-use Department in Johnstown Castle, Wexford and will collaborate closely with the Spatial Analysis Unit in the Rural Economy and Development Programme in Ashtown, Dublin 15. Main Duties and Responsibilities:  Develop a land-use modelling and spatial analysis research programme in collaboration with other Teagasc researchers.  Further develop spatial analysis and spatial modelling as tools for enhancing the sustainability of Irish farming systems. This should help inform land use policies, and the analysis of the effects of alternative land use scenarios on agricultural and environmental sustainability.  Utilise and further develop on-line farm scale planning tools to support decision making on sustainable farming practices.  Pursue funding opportunities to further resource the research programme, by building a team of post- doctoral researchers and post graduate students.  Collate new and manage existing geospatial datasets/databases/services.  Collaborate with other subject matter experts to develop multi-disciplinary approaches to address issues.  Contribute to the teamwork in the Environment, Soils and Land-use Department at Johnstown Castle, and foster research collaboration and integration.  Data analysis and curation, interpretation of scientific results and writing of scientific peer reviewed papers, reports and stakeholder communications.  Supervise post graduate students in collaboration with university and Teagasc partners. Actively manage resources (people, data, ICT/software resources) assigned to the research programme of the appointee.  Assist Teagasc in meeting the commitments of the Quality Customer Service charter and action plan.  Actively participate in the annual business planning and Performance Management Development System (PMDS) processes.  Fully co-operate with the provisions made for ensuring the health, safety and welfare of themselves, fellow staff and non-Teagasc staff and co-operate with management in enabling Teagasc to comply with legal obligations.
